Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my copy of the book autographed?

Sure! If you’d like a signed bookplate, just send me a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope at the address on the contact page. Or, send me the book with a self-addressed, stamped return envelope large enough to hold the book and I’ll sign it. Either way, let me know if you want it personalized or just signed with my name.

How did you become interested in black bears?

I’ve always been a nature freak, but my love for bears began with several childhood experiences. We spent many family vacations in Wisconsin where we’d fish, hike and explore nature. Then at sunset we'd drive to the local garbage dump and watch the bears come out to feed. It was a popular thing for tourists to do back then in the 1960's and 70's because it got you close enough to actually reach out the car window and touch the bears (if you were foolish enough!) It was amazing to be that close to them, to hear and smell them! I’ve also encountered black bears during a wilderness camping trip to Minnesota’s Boundary Waters and of course, the encounter at the Chippewa Flowage when we were lost in the woods and the bear followed us. Experiences like these tend to make lasting impressions—and fun story ideas.

Are Bearwalkers really a part of Native American mythology?

Yes. According to my research, the Ojibwa (Chippewa) people of the North Woods have a legend about sorcerer shapeshifters who live in the forest. Although these creatures often portend death or bad news, I chose to portray them as harmless beings who just want to be left alone. As far as I know, the Ojibwa do not have individuals who have ever served as “protectors.”

Is Marin based on a real person?

Alas, no. He’s pure imagination and my favorite character in the book. I’d hate to run into him in the woods at night-- but I’d love to find him soaking in my bathtub!

Who are your favorite writers?

Wow, there are so many. For paranormal romance: Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lori Handeland, Karen Marie Moning. Mysteries: Randy Wayne White’s “Doc Ford” series is addictive. Travel: Bill Bryson’s adventures are hilarious. Sci-Fi: Eric Garcia’s “Rex” series is fun, quirky and brilliant.

What’s next for the Bearwalkers?

The stories will continue as long as Marin and Lindy continue to enchant readers. I’ve also completed a dark fantasy ghost story with Chicago as a setting.
